New Features in Global Village Call Center
Improved Message Deleting: Call Center now allows you to select from a number of options when deleting messages. These options are:

  1. Delete Selected Message
  2. Delete All Messages
  3. Delete Heard Messages
  4. Delete Messages by Date. To use one of these options when deleting messages, click and hold the mouse button down on the Message Delete button (marked with an X) in the Answering Machine panel of the Global Village Call Center application. Choose the delete option you want to use and release the mouse button. Note that the delete options appear only if there are messages in the Message List window.

Speech Recognition Support: Call Center now includes a technology demonstration of Apple Computer's Speech Recognition System. This feature is intended for advanced users. For instructions on using the speech recognition features, refer to the Read Me file entitled "Speech Recognition - Read Me," which will be installed in the TelePort 33.6 Speakerphone folder on the root level of your hard drive.

Installing the Software
Installing the Speakerphone Modem Software: Global Village recommends that you install the TelePort Speakerphone modem software while your modem is connected to the Modem port on the back of your Macintosh computer. If you install the software while the modem is connected to the Printer port, you must then select the Printer port in the TelePort control panel and in the Call Center application. To do this, open the TelePort control panel, click Select Port, and then choose the Printer port. In the Call Center, choose General from the Setup menu. Choose the Printer port from the Macintosh Port pop-up menu. You must then restart your Macintosh computer.

Note: Your TelePort Speakerphone Edition modem will work only with TelePort Speakerphone software 1.0 or later.

Installing Over GlobalFax 2.5 or Earlier: If you install over GlobalFax 2.5 or earlier, you must do the following:

  • Reenter your GlobalFax preferences
  • Use the Address Book submenu in the File menu to open existing address books

You can reenter your preferences, such as your local area code and long-distance prefix, in the Setup Helper application that comes with TelePort Speakerphone 1.0.1 software. The Setup Helper application launches automatically when you restart your Macintosh computer following installation. Note that setting GlobalFax software to automatically receive faxes is a preference; you must reset this option after installing the TelePort Speakerphone 1.0.1 software.

You can open your old GlobalFax address books by choosing Open Other from the Open Address Book submenu in the File menu. A directory dialog box appears from which you can open an address book. By default address books are located in the Personal folder, in the Global Village folder, in the Preferences folder, in your System Folder.

Optimizing Speakerphone Voice Quality
This speakerphone modem has a high-quality, built-in speaker and microphone. Sound quality depends on the background noise in your room, your distance from the modem when you speak, and telephone line quality. The speakerphone works best when you speak close to it in a quiet room over clear telephone connections.

To optimize the modem for your environment, you can adjust the speaker volume and microphone sensitivity by using sliders in the Call Center application. Wait for several seconds after changing these settings to allow the speakerphone to adjust before you change the settings again. You can continue talking while the speakerphone adjusts. Following are some tips for improving the clarity of your voice through the speakerphone modem:

  1. Position the modem away from sources of background noise, such as a hard drives or fans.
  2. Speak from a location that is within one or two feet of the modem.
  3. Reduce the effect of background noise by adjusting the Microphone Sensitivity slider in the Call Center application to a lower setting.
  4. In very noisy rooms, connect an external, unidirectional microphone to the modem.
  5. If you have connected an external microphone, you may want to adjust the Microphone Sensitivity slider in the Call Center application to a lower setting.

Setting Up Your TelePort Speakerphone Modem for Use with On-Line Services and Telecommunications Applications
Global Village provides scripts and instructions for using your TelePort Speakerphone Edition modem with the following on-line services and telecommunications applications:

  • America Online
  • Apple Remote Access
  • ClarisWorks
  • CompuServe Information Manager
  • Config PPP
  • FirstClass
  • Lotus Notes
  • Prodigy
For information about using your TelePort Speakerphone Edition modem with these on-line services and applications, see the Scripts - Read Me file located in TelePort Accessories folder inside the TelePort 33.6 Speakerphone folder at the root level of your hard drive.

Note: This software installs the TelePort 33.6 Speakerphone folder at the root level of your hard drive. Use this folder and its contents in place of any previous TelePort Accessories folder installed on your hard drive. The Scripts - Read Me file in this folder contains instructions for setting up your on-line services or telecommunications applications for the TelePort Speakerphone Edition modem.

Anomalies
This section provides information about anomalies that you might encounter while using the modem and Global Village software.

640X480 Resolution Monitor:
GlobalFax software and the Call Center application require a monitor with at least 640X480 resolution for optimum viewing of its windows. For example, an Apple 12" RGB monitor is smaller than 640X480; some windows are not completely visible on that monitor.

Enable 14.4k bps Fax:
The Enable 14.4k bps Fax option in the Sending dialog box affects both sending and receiving faxes.

Fax Documents Named After Other Windows or Floating Palettes:
Typically, when you create a fax, the name of the imaged fax file is taken from the frontmost window of the application from which you are faxing. When faxing from certain applications, however, the fax name can be taken from another window or floating palette.

For instance, suppose that you are faxing a document named "Flowers" from Adobe Photoshop. If you are using the floating palette called "Brushes" when faxing, the imaged fax file might be called "Brushes" instead of "Flowers." This discrepancy does not affect the fax, which will be sent normally. You can rename an imaged fax file from the Global Village Fax Center.

Manual Receive and Global Village Call Center:
If you set the Call Center application to answer voice calls, you cannot manually receive faxes. To automatically receive voice calls and fax calls on the same telephone line, use the Setup Helper to enable Voice/Fax Call Sensing. The Setup Helper appears when you first install the TelePort software and restart your Macintosh computer. To enable voice/fax call sensing at a later time, choose Global Village Fax Center from the Apple menu. Choose Receiving from the Setup menu. Choose Voice/Fax Call Sensing from the Answer After pop-up menu.

Maximum Throughput Option:
If you have an AV Macintosh computer or a Power Macintosh computer with serial DMA, the TelePort control panel has an additional check box labeled Maximum Throughput. As described in the TelePort 33.6 Speakerphone Edition User's Guide, this check box increases the maximum port speed to 115,200 bps.

Some telecommunications applications do not have an option for selecting the port speed of 115,200 bps. However, if you select the Maximum Throughput check box, you will receive a port speed of 115,200 bps.

Some applications do not expect the modem to return a CONNECT 115200 message. To avoid any problems associated with this unexpected message, modify the modem's initialization string to include a W2 command at the end. This command causes the modem to report its actual connection speed (for example, 14400, 19200, or 28800) instead of the port speed.

Modem Sound Can Be Adjusted or Turned Off from Many Applications:
The modem speaker volume operates independently from the volume control in Apple's Sound control panel. To adjust or turn off modem sounds, use the volume option in your telecommunications application.

You can also adjust the speakerphone volume by using the volume slider on the modem, as well as the volume slider in the Global Village Call Center application.

Modem Status View:
The Global Village status bar can display two types of on-screen status - Standard View and Modem View. Standard View displays only the connection state of the modem; for instance, it might display "Connect 33,600 bps" when you make a connection at that speed. Modem View displays more detailed connection information, such as the speed, communications protocol, and error-correction protocol.

Some telecommunications applications do not support the technology used to provide the Modem View. If your telecommunications application does not detect the speakerphone modem or cannot answer calls, you might need to disable the Modem View. To disable the Modem View, open the TelePort control panel, click the pop-up menu next to the Show Status check box, and choose Standard View Only. Restart your Macintosh computer.

Important: If you choose Standard View Only in the TelePort control panel, the status bar always displays "Ready" regardless of the modem's connection state, unless you reselect the port to which the modem is connected. After you choose Standard View Only and restart your Macintosh computer, open the TelePort control panel, click the Select Port icon and reselect the port to which the modem is connected. You only have to do this once unless you reinstall the TelePort software.

Redial Feature in Call Center:
The redial feature in the Call Center application redials the last number you dialed with the Call Center application. To redial a call you made with a telephone attached to the modem, use the redial feature, if there is one, on the telephone.

Ring Through Modem Speaker:
If you select the Voice/Fax Call Sensing option, the capability to play a ring sound on the modem for incoming calls will be disabled. To play a ring sound on your computer speaker for incoming calls, select the "Play ring sound through computer speaker" option in the Notification panel of the Setup dialog box in the Call Center.

Speaker Volume for Faxing Can Be Set from the Control Panel:
You can adjust the speaker volume for sounds emitted when GlobalFax is sending a fax by using the volume slider in the TelePort control panel.

Port Selection:
If you connect your modem to a different port, be sure to select the appropriate port in the TelePort control panel, as well as in the General panel of the Setup dialog box in the Call Center application.

Compatibility Issue
This section contains information about conflicts between Global Village products and other software and hardware products, including the following:

  • Applications
  • Extensions and INITs
  • Telecommunications applications

The following compatibility information is accurate as of the time of this release. Newer releases of these applications or the Apple system software might resolve these conflicts.

Applications

Claris Organizer 1.0v3:
Claris Organizer cannot dial out using the TelePort Speakerphone Edition modem. Global Village has notified Claris regarding this issue.

GlobalFax Software for PowerPort Modems:
The TelePort Speakerphone 1.0.1 software is not compatible with GlobalFax software for PowerPort modems. If you want to use your TelePort Speakerphone Edition modem with your PowerBook computer, you must first deinstall all PowerPort software (if installed) and then install the TelePort Speakerphone 1.0.1 software.

Note: If you want to return to your internal PowerPort modem, you must first deinstall the TelePort Speakerphone 1.0.1 software and then reinstall your GlobalFax software for PowerPort modems. To deinstall the speakerphone software, run the TelePort Speakerphone 1.0.1 installer and choose Custom Remove from the Easy Install pop-up menu. Select all components and then click Remove.

OneWorld GlobalFax:
The TelePort Speakerphone 1.0.1 software is not compatible with OneWorld software. Users of OneWorld Fax should continue using the latest compatible version of GlobalFax software (currently version 2.5.6).

PageMaker and Address Books:
When faxing from PageMaker, do not attempt to choose a different GlobalFax address book. Doing so can cause a crash. To use another address book, fax from another application, switch address books, cancel the fax, and then fax from PageMaker using the new address book.

PageNow!:
When using PageNow! software be sure to set the baud rate above 300. Consult your manual included with PageNow! for instructions on how to configure the modem.

Persuasion 3.0:
Using the Chooser shortcut key to send a fax from Persuasion is not supported; an alert box appears if you attempt to use this method of sending a fax. To send a fax, select the GlobalFax printer driver in the Chooser. After you choose Fax from the File menu, the GlobalFax dialog box appears several times. Respond in the same way to each one.

QuarkXPress:
When faxing from QuarkXPress, do not enter text in the Find field to select a fax address from the address book. Select individuals and groups by clicking their names in the address list.

In addition, do not fax images with previews greater than 8 bits. Instead, import the image with an 8-bit preview before faxing.

Quicken:
To Option-fax from Quicken, you must first change the Edit key in Quicken to the Control key. To do so, open Quicken and choose Iconbar from the Settings menu. When the Iconbar dialog box appears, change the Quicken Edit key to the Control key.

If you have difficulty faxing from Quicken, try allocating more memory to the Quicken application.

Ready, Set, Go!:
Choosing the Printer Setup command (Fax Setup command if you hold down the Option key) from the File menu crashes your computer. Instead, choose the Page Setup command.

Studio32, Photoshop, and ColorStudio:
These applications support printing to color printers only. Make sure that you choose a greyscale option from the Quality pop-up menu in the GlobalFax dialog box when you send a fax from one of these applications.

Extensions and Inits

Faxing with QuickDraw GX:
Users of QuickDraw GX should be aware that it can take several minutes to image a fax with GlobalFax GX, since GlobalFax GX images the fax in the background. You can double-click the GlobalFax GX Desktop Fax icon to see the progress of the fax imaging.

Finder Scripting Extension and 5200/6300 Macintosh Computers:
If you have System 7.5.3 software and this computer configuration, you might receive an "out of memory" message after faxing an open window. The "out of memory" message appears after you choose another menu item. To avoid this, disable the Finder Scripting extension in the Extensions Manager, located in your Control Panels folder.

LaserWriter 8.0 Printer Driver:
If you use the LaserWriter 8.0 printer driver, upgrade to the latest version. Currently, the latest version is 8.3.3. You might experience problems with LaserWriter 8.x printer drivers earlier than 8.3.3.

Virex:
Global Village Toolbox and some versions of Virex conflict at startup - Virex must load first. To ensure that Virex loads first, move Virex to your Extensions folder and rename it "aVirex," or select Virex's Load First startup option.

Telecommunications Applications

Apple Remote Access (ARA):
When using ARA for the first time with this modem, you must click the Modem Port selection in the Remote Access Setup control panel after selecting the modem script file that corresponds to your version of ARA. This is necessary for both originate and answer modes. You must also click the Modem Port selection after you change between the modem status options, "Standard View Only" and "Standard & Modem Views", in the TelePort control panel. You do not need to do this again unless you reinstall ARA.

You can send a fax while the ARA Answer Calls option is selected in the Remote Access Setup control panel. To receive faxes while the ARA Answer Calls option is selected, you must select the Global Village 33.6 for ARA 2.0, or the GV 28.8/33.6 for ARA 2.1/OT-PPP script file. These scripts allow the modem to discriminate between an incoming fax and an incoming ARA call.

Note: The TelePort Speakerphone Edition modem can either discriminate between fax and data calls, or fax and voice calls. If you have the ARA Answer Calls option selected, the modem discriminates between fax and data calls. If you want the modem to discriminate between fax and voice calls, deselect the ARA Answer Calls option and make sure you have selected Voice/Fax in the Receiving Setup window within Global Village Fax Center.

GlobalTransfer:
GlobalTransfer will identify your TelePort Speakerphone modem as a TelePort Platinum. This will work with your TelePort Speakerphone modem.

MacIntercom Lite v1.1.1:
When using MacIntercom Lite, be sure to select Modem Port, not Modem, when selecting a port. Selecting Modem can cause your system to freeze. It can also disable the modem status information that appears in your menu bar.

MacPPP:
If you are experiencing any problems using MacPPP, Global Village recommends that you download the latest version of FreePPP from www.rockstar.com.

MacSlip 3.0.4 and 115,200 bps Port Speed:
If you have an AV Macintosh computer or a Power Macintosh computer with serial DMA, and you set MacSlip's Speed setting to 115,200 bps or higher, MacSlip will display the warning "The selected serial port does not support 115,200 or 230,400." To set MacSlip to connect at 115,200 bps, set MacSlip's Speed setting to 57,600 bps and make sure that the Maximum Throughput option is selected in the TelePort control panel. Maximum Throughput is supported only on Macintosh computers with Serial DMA.

Timbuktu Remote:
When Timbuktu is set to answer calls, GlobalFax will report a PortInUse error if you have a fax queued to send after you restart your Macintosh. You can reschedule the fax, or it will send correctly on its second attempt. Be sure to have selected some number of attempts in the Sending Setup in the Global Village Fax Center if you do not wish to reschedule the fax.

Important: When your TelePort Speakerphone modem is set to receive faxes, you cannot answer calls with Timbuktu. Be sure to turn off Fax Receive in the Global Village Fax Center before putting Timbuktu in answer mode. Farallon is aware of this issue and a solution is being worked on.

White Knight v12.03:
You must use the Communications Toolbox when using this telecommunications application with your TelePort Speakerphone Edition modem. Please refer to the manual included with White Knight for instructions on how to do this.
