  • How to run this firmware updater

What is new in the Global Village 56K PC Card firmware
This updater includes the latest version of both V.90 ITU 56K standard-compliant firmware and K56flex firmware for your PC Card 56K modem. It allows you to update your modem's firmware, and to switch between V.90 and K56flex mode of operation.

It includes version 1.200 of K56flex firmware and version 2.081 of V.90 firmware for 56K PC Cards.

Who should use this firmware updater
Only users of US modems should use this updater, damage to your modem may occur if you attempt to use this updater on any other modem.

Before updating to the ITU standard, first check to see if your ISP has upgraded the access number you use to the ITU standard. Because ISP access equipment provides backward compatibility, most people can simply stay with K56flex firmware and continue to get high-speed connections.

If you change ISPs or call different access numbers, you may need to change to V.90, or switch back and forth between V.90 and K56flex. In most cases there will not be a significant performance difference between V.90 and K56flex when connecting to ISPs that support both protocols. The updater application will check your modem for current firmware and display it next to Current Modem Firmware. If you have K56flex firmware, you will be given the option to change to V.90. If you have V.90 firmware, you will be given the option to change to K56flex. You must read the updater's attached Read Me to learn how to use this function.

This updater should be used by owners of Global Village 56K PC Card Modem/Ethernet cards or Modem-only cards, for Macintosh PowerBook. The firmware updater automatically checks that you have the correct modem hardware before updating the firmware.

How to run the firmware updater

  1. Make sure your PowerBook is running on an AC Power Adapter that is plugged in rather than running on battery power only
  2. Make sure that your Global Village PC Card is seated snugly in the PCMCIA slot
  3. Start your PowerBook with Global Village fax software installed
  4. Place a copy of the updater on your hard drive
  5. Quit all open applications and communications programs
  6. If you are on a network, unmount any mounted servers
  7. Read the Read Me Ç PC Card Updater document for additional instructions
  8. Launch the PC_Card_K56_ROM_Update3 application
  9. If AppleTalk is on, the application will temporarily disable AppleTalk
  10. Select the port to which your modem is connected (this will be the name of your PC Card)
  11. To update to V.90, click the Change to V.90 button
  12. For information on testing V.90 connections, refer to the Read Me or the instructions in the updater application

Troubleshooting
If you are using a modem/Ethernet card on the PowerBook 500, 190, 5300, or 1400, you must start your computer with Global Village Extensions loaded. If you start with Extensions off, the updater application will not be able to recognize the card. If you encounter an init conflict, create a Set that loads just the Global Village software. If you are using a modem/Ethernet card on the PowerBook 3400, 2400, or G3 series, the updater application will recognize the card if you restart with Extensions off but Global Village software was previously installed.

This installer is for use with Global Village 56K PC Cards on Macintosh PowerBooks Only.
